    How to roll dice online

    1. Choose the number of dice. You can roll 1 to 6 dice at once.
    2. Choose the kind of die. The usual die has 6 sides, and d4, d8, d10, d12 and d20 are available too.
    3. Roll. Each die shows its result, and the total appears below.
    4. Roll again whenever you need a new roll. The previous result has no effect on the next one.

    Is an online die fair?

The result comes from the cryptographic random number generator built into your browser, the same one the browser uses for security keys. Every face has an equal chance: on a 6 sided die each number comes up on average once in 6 rolls.

Every roll is independent. If a six has come up three times in a row, the chance of a six on the next roll is still 1 in 6. Short runs of the same number are a normal part of randomness, not a sign that the die is faulty.

    Kinds of dice: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 and d20

    • d4 has 4 sides and the shape of a tetrahedron, a pyramid with a triangular base.
    • d6 is the ordinary die. On it opposite faces always add up to 7: 1 and 6, 2 and 5, 3 and 4.
    • d8 has 8 sides and the shape of an octahedron.
    • d10 has 10 sides, and its results run from 1 to 10 or from 0 to 9.
    • d12 has 12 sides and the shape of a dodecahedron.
    • d20 has 20 sides and the shape of an icosahedron. It is the best known die in role playing games.

Odds of totals with two dice

Two ordinary dice give 36 equally likely combinations. The totals are not equally common, because more combinations lead to some of them:

    TotalCombinations out of 36Chance
    212.78%
    325.56%
    438.33%
    5411.11%
    6513.89%
    7616.67%
    8513.89%
    9411.11%
    1038.33%
    1125.56%
    1212.78%

Seven is the most common total because six combinations make it: 1 and 6, 2 and 5, 3 and 4, and the other way round. Two and twelve come up in only one way each. The average total of two dice is 7.

What to use an online die for

    • Board games: when a die goes missing or you need several dice at once.
    • Ludo and its German cousin Mensch ärgere Dich nicht, known in Bosnia as Čovječe ne ljuti se: the game comes from the older Indian game pachisi, and Josef Friedrich Schmidt devised the German version around 1907. Under the most common rules a piece enters the board only when you roll a six.
    • Role playing games: in games such as Dungeons and Dragons a d20 decides whether an action succeeds, and the other dice set damage and other values.
    • Maths in the classroom: by rolling many times children see the results move closer to the odds table and why seven is the most common total.

    What 2d6 means

Role playing games and board game rules write dice in a short form. The number before the letter d says how many dice you roll, and the number after it how many sides each die has.

    • 1d20: one 20 sided die, a result from 1 to 20.
    • 2d6: two ordinary dice added together, a total from 2 to 12.
    • 3d6+2: three ordinary dice with 2 added to the total, so the result runs from 5 to 20.

When the number before the letter is left out, as in d20, you roll one die.

    Common questions

How do you roll a die online?

Choose how many dice to roll and which kind, from d4 to d20, and press the roll button. You see each die's result and the total at once.

Is an online die really random?

Yes. The result comes from the cryptographic random number generator in your browser, and every face of the die has an equal chance.

Which total comes up most often with two dice?

Seven. It is made by 6 of the 36 possible combinations, so it comes up in about 16.67 percent of rolls. Two and twelve are the rarest, at 2.78 percent each.

    What does d20 mean?

d20 means a die with 20 sides. The letter d stands for die and the number after it for the number of sides, so a d6 is an ordinary six sided die.

Can I roll several dice at once?

Yes. The tool rolls 1 to 6 dice at once, shows each result and adds them up into a total.
